10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Here are 10 essential questions to ask a wedding photographer before booking to make sure you’re making the right call for you.

Because you deserve more than pretty photos — you deserve someone who just gets it.

So you’re engaged and starting to look for your wedding photographer — but how do you know if someone is the one? (Photographer-wise, of course)

It’s about more than just liking their photos on Instagram. Your wedding photographer will be with you for most of your wedding day — sometimes more than your own family. So making sure you connect, feel comfortable, and trust them is huge.

1. What’s your photography style?

This helps you understand how they shoot and edit. Are their photos light and airy? Dark and moody? True-to-life and candid (like mine)? You want their style to reflect how you want to remember your day.

Pro tip: Ask to see full galleries, not just highlights on Instagram.

2. How do you approach posing and candid moments?

Some photographers stick to traditional posing, while others (like me) use prompts and movement to create natural, real moments. If you’re a little camera-shy, this one’s important.

3. Can we see 3 full wedding galleries from 6-9 months ago?

This helps give you an idea of how their most recent work looks as a whole and if there’s been any changes over the months. Seeing a full gallery shows you how the photographer interacts and captures people and the atmosphere in any lighting situation.

Bonus points if they can show you a gallery at your wedding venue.

4. What’s your turnaround time?

This one is often overlooked but super important! You’ll want to know when you can expect sneak peeks and your full gallery.

For me: sneak peeks within 24–48 hours and full galleries in 4–6 weeks (or 6–8 in peak fall season).

5. What’s your backup plan if something happens to you?

A good photographer will have a plan in place in case of illness, emergency, or equipment failure — including backups and a solid photographer network.

6. Will we connect before the wedding?

You want to know how involved they’ll be leading up to the day. Do they help with timelines? Do they offer planning advice or guides?

My couples get planning support, custom timelines, and check-ins throughout — so you’re never left guessing.

7. How do you make couples feel comfortable in front of the camera?

The real magic happens when you’re relaxed and having fun. Look for someone who makes you feel at ease — someone you can laugh with, be yourselves with, and trust to guide you.

8. How do they back up wedding photos?

This is a big one! Your photos are irreplaceable. A professional photographer should have a solid backup process — like dual memory cards, cloud backups, and external hard drives — to make sure your memories are safe.

I personally back everything up in multiple places right after your day, so your memories are protected.

9. How will we receive our photos?

Make sure you know how and when you’ll get your images. Will they be sent digitally? Through an online gallery? Do you get printing rights?

I deliver your sneak peeks within 24–48 hours and full galleries within 4–6 weeks (or 6–8 in peak fall). Your photos come via a beautiful online gallery where you can download, share, and even order prints.

10. What does the booking process look like?

Make sure you’re clear on how to move forward if you’re ready to book. A solid photographer will walk you through the steps clearly and professionally.

With me: we start with an inquiry → discovery call → proposal (contract + invoice) → planning → gallery delivery!

Personality questions to ask your wedding photographer:

How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience really matters. Someone who has photographed dozens (or even hundreds) of weddings will be better prepared to handle timelines, lighting shifts, and unexpected situations smoothly.

I’ve photographed close to 120 weddings across Michigan and beyond — each one unique, but all filled with love, laughs, and a little chaos in the best way.

→ What’s your favorite part of a wedding day?

Photographers often have favorite moments — and it can tell you a lot about their personality. Personally? I love the in-between stuff: the teary hugs, the way your partner looks at you when you’re not looking, and that just-married bliss right after the ceremony.

Final Thought: Go with your gut.

No matter what or how many questions to ask your wedding photographer, the most important thing is how you feel around them. Do you vibe with them? Do they make you feel safe, comfortable, and excited? That’s what really matters.
