We start at the location with the best light, which almost always means golden hour, the thirty to forty five minutes before sunset when the light is soft and warm and flattering on everyone. I always plan the session around the light first and build everything else around that.

From there I ease into things. I start with some basic poses just to get a feel for the couple, how comfortable they are with each other in front of the camera, whether they are naturally relaxed or whether they need a little more time to loosen up. Not every prompt works for every couple, so I pay close attention early on and adjust as we go.

Once I feel like we have gotten some strong shots from one spot, we move. I try to maximize every location we are working with, pulling as many different looks as possible before transitioning to the next setup. By the end of the session we have worked through multiple locations and lighting situations and the couple has almost always forgotten to be nervous.

Simple Tips for Getting Ready for Your Engagement Session

You do not need to overthink this. A few simple things make a real difference.

Wear something you actually feel good in. Not just something that photographs well, but something that feels like you. Comfort translates on camera in ways that are hard to fake.

Coordinate with your partner without fully matching. Similar tones and complementary styles tend to look more natural than identical outfits.

Bring a second outfit if you want variety. A lot of couples like to start with something more dressed up and change into something more casual partway through. It gives the gallery a different feel and breaks the session up naturally.

Give yourself buffer time getting there. Rushing to the session means starting the session already stressed, and that takes time to shake off.

How long does an engagement session last?

Most engagement sessions run between sixty and ninety minutes. That gives us enough time to work through multiple locations and lighting situations without the session starting to feel like a marathon.

Do I need an engagement session if I am already comfortable in front of the camera?

Even if you feel comfortable on your own, an engagement session gives us time together before your wedding day. You learn how I work, I learn how you move and what brings out the best in you, and that makes your wedding day portraits significantly stronger.

What if the weather is bad on the day of my session?

We reschedule. I would rather push the session to a day with better light than push through bad conditions and end up with photos that do not represent what is possible.

Can we do our engagement session at a location that is meaningful to us?

Absolutely. Some of my favorite sessions have been at places that meant something specific to the couple. If you have a spot in mind, bring it up when we connect and we will figure out the best way to make it work.

When should we do our engagement session?

I recommend doing it at least 6-12 months before your wedding depending on the seasons. Save the dates normally go out 6-12 months if you’d like your engagement photos in your save the dates. Invites go out 6-8 weeks if you’d like your photos on the invites. That gives you time to get comfortable with the process and gives me time to get to know you before your wedding day.
