Jake + Julia’s Engagement session at Stony Creek Metropark

Jake and Julia are one of those couples that you feel like you’ve known for years. Their engagement session at Stony Creek was full of laughter and their love for one anther. It was my first time meeting them in person besides for our discovery call a couple months ago, but they made me feel so relaxed and I felt like I was able to be more creative during this session. They both were so go with the flow that any prompt I gave them, they just went and nailed it first try every time. I love when couples embrace their love and feel so comfortable around each other in front of the camera. I know it’s not the easiest thing to do if you’re not used to it.

For their engagement session we started out at the golf course, then went to the field around the corner, and then ended at the beach where the sun was creating the most beautiful light. Here are a couple photos at each location:

The Trees at The Golf Course

The trees had that cozy, woodsy feel without needing to hike deep into the woods — perfect for easing into the session and shaking off any nerves for the session. It was also perfect timing too as it was just before golden hour, so the trees helped to diffuse the harsh light before changing locations.

I like to do more standard standing poses here to get those out of the way and make the couple feel more comfortable with my shooting style, my directing, and with me.

The Field

The field was glowing in the most magical way as the sun started to dip. I love shooting in this spot because it gives off those effortless, romantic, barefoot-in-the-field vibes that feel like pure Michigan summer. It’s open enough to let you move around and interact naturally — which makes for the most candid, authentic moments.

I like to do more pick up and run around prompts here because there is so much space in the field. It also lets the couple be more playful and not feel like they’re stuck to poses and directions.

Eastwood Beach

GUYS let me tell you — golden hour by the water is everything. The light reflects off the lake so beautifully, and it’s such a peaceful way to end the session. Whether you’re dipping your toes in or just wrapped up in a blanket watching the sunset, it adds such an intimate, nostalgic feeling to the photos.

Again with the field, I like to be more playful at this location. Lots of spinning around, walking up and down the beach and in the water, the freedom to get in the water and splash each other to cool off a little. The options are endless at the Stony Creek beach.

If you’re dreaming of that natural, glowy look, Stony Creek is the spot. It’s super spacious with so many trails, lakeside areas, and fields to explore. The light here at sunset is next level. It’s perfect if you want to wear something cozy, walk barefoot in the grass, or pop champagne in the middle of a field.

Stony Creek offers so much room to explore, but even just hitting those three spots — woods, fields, and beach — gives you a full gallery with tons of variety, while still feeling cohesive. It’s also super easy to move between these areas with a quick drive or short walk, so you’re never rushed or stressed during your session.

Pro tip: Evening sessions here are best. Golden hour absolutely glows at Stony, and on weekdays it’s usually nice and quiet. Just make sure to bring a metropark pass or pay the $10 entry fee at the gate!
